Mona, a sex and love addict, initially resisted spirituality and the concept of God when they first came into recovery, feeling too broken for the program to work. However, their desperation led them to embrace a flexible idea of a higher power, evolving from figures like Jiminy Cricket and Lisa from Weird Science, and committing to “go to any lengths” to recover. Through consistent step-work, accountability, and continued attendance at meetings, Mona’s life gradually expanded, demonstrating that change happened as they kept working the program, even when they felt it wasn’t.
